508 Mechanics
of Earthquakes and Faulting Spring
Term, 2021
Project: In consultation with the instructor, identify a data-gathering, laboratory-based project that involves one or more of the course topics. The project can include measurement of rock properties, use of analog or digital transducers, and/or a combination of lab measurements and analysis of field specimens (e.g., thin sections, fault zone fabric, gouge particle size distribution). Some literature review will be necessary to design and implement the project.
á One page summary of the problem.
á A 6-8 page paper (text and figures) describing your project and results
á A 2-3 page summary distributed to everyone to accompany your presentation
á Presentation: Lead a 30-40 minute presentation on your project.
á Presentations will take place during class near the end of the semester.
Topic Suggestions:
á Brittle fracture: strain rate dependence of inelastic yield point and ultimate strength.
